Chocolate milk must stay in school! “In 58 schools that removed or limited flavored milk options, milk consumption dropped a dramatic 35%, on average,” says reliable source, Chocolate: A Tasty Nutrition. For those of you who say no to chocolate milk because of its sugar and calorie value, think about this: chocolate milk has the same nutritional value as plain, white milk. Milk, in general, has many high health benefits, and if we can’t get children to have these benefits with plain milk, then let’s get children to have these benefits with good old chocolate milk. Overall, you need milk. Milk has the same nutritional value as 1/2 cup of diced cantaloupe, 3 1/2 ounces of apple with skin and 1/2 cup of cooked baked beans. That sounds healthier, but the truth? That is 171 calories more than just drinking chocolate milk. Milk has many important things many children are missing out on. Answer this -is it better to have important nutrients with a bit of added sugar, or is it better to have no nutrients at all? The answer is obvious. So why not choose chocolate milk? Chocolate milk makes you gain weight, right? Or does it? The American Heart Association says, “when sugars are added to otherwise nutrient-rich foods, such as sugar-sweetened dairy products like flavored milk and yogurt…the quality of children’s and adolescents’ diets improves, and in the case of flavored milk, no adverse effects on weight status were found.” Most nutritional experts say that the sugar vs. the milk in chocolate milk is a fair trade, so most likely, you won’t gain all that weight you think you will. Oh, but chocolate milk has so much sugar, you say. Well, not necessarily. Chocolate milk only makes up less than 2% in most American teenagers diets. What you really need to look out for is juice and sodas, which make up more than 50% of American teenagers diets. So, does chocolate milk really have the calories some people say? Probably not. Chocolate milk is on our side, and we have to see that. Chocolate milk is a good thing for us. What else can we resort to? Chocolate milk is a healthy, nutrient high beverage, and that’s the plain truth.
