Home Alone
Movie Review By: Lakhi
The movie Home Alone was released in 1990, directed by Chris Columbus, and starred Macaulay Culkin. The movie takes place in Winnetka, Illinois, where a large family lives in a really big house. The family takes a vacation to Paris, France and accidentally leaves one of their children behind, when a fierce storm knocks out their power, and they oversleep, causing them to rush to the airport. All alone in the house, the boy is confronted by burglars, but fortunately is able to trick them.
What I like best about the film is when the boy sets up traps for the burglars. This trap takes place in the boy’s basement. The basement is small and unfinished and it has shelves of appliances which are hard to see because it is dark. He starts to create these traps after he is followed home by a mysterious truck with the burglars inside.
The traps are made out of objects such as toy cars, sticks, and string, that he finds at home. One of the traps involves a bowling ball, which is on a shelf and is attached to the string on the floor. The burglar doesn’t see the string that is attached to the bowling ball so he trips on it and the bowling ball falls and hits his stomach. Another trap occurs when the burglar steps on a toy car and it triggers the paint bucket to come flying at him.
I like this movie because when the boy overcomes the fear of staying home alone, he becomes creative and sets traps to protect himself.
