All those Pokemon fans out there know the Pokemon Kyogre, right? But did you know that there is an animal that looks a lot like that Pokemon? This animal is called the glaucus atlanticus, or more commonly called the blue atlanticus. This small, slender, blue, sea slug that can grow up to 3 centimeters long, is much more than just weird and funny looking. It has a few tricks up its sleeve that is sure to blow your mind.
Tricks This creature can’t move on its own, so it swallows an air bubble that it keeps in its belly. This allows the blue glaucus to float and drift off to wherever the current takes it. It might not seem that interesting, but cut it some slack, it is a sea slug after all. To hide from predators it uses a form of camouflage called color shading. When it swallow the air bubble, it flips over so that it goes belly up ( not dead, it's just that its belly faces upwards). Its underside ( belly) is blue so if an animal saw it from above it would look blue, just like the ocean. If an animal was under it, it would see the back of the blue glaucus which is gray just like the murky deeper waters. This last trick blew me away. This creature's diet consists of hydrozoans, a creature in the same phylum as jellyfish. The blue glaucus especially likes the portuguese-man-o’-war. Though the portuguese-man-o’-war’s sting is deadly to humans, the blue glaucus can swallow its stinging cells without hurting itself. But the blue glaucus can do more than protect itself. It can contain the poison in its finger-like structures to use as a defense mechanism. Told you it was going to blow your mind.

The Big Bang is a theory on how our universe ( or multiverse!) began about 13.7 billion years ago. It is known as, “The Big Bang Theory”. (Not the show) You can’t name one person who created The Big Bang Theory. It was created mainly by Albert Einstein, priest George Lemaitre and Edwin Hubble. The Big Bang may have started 13.7 billion years ago, but it is still a very fascinating topic today.
According to The Big Bang Theory, our universe (or maybe even multiverse) started as a very small bubble. (The bubble was approximately a million, billion, billion times smaller than a SINGLE ATOM!!! HOW CRAZY IS THAT!?!?!?!?) Although the bubble was very small, it was extremely hot. The temperature was MUCH more than 1 billion degrees Fahrenheit! When the bubble exceeded a certain temperature it EXPLODED. In less than a microsecond the universe was filled with neutrons, protons, electrons, anti-electrons, photons and neutrinos. Seconds after the Big Bang, our young universe (or even multiverse!) started expanding. Galaxies, clusters, stars, planets and much, much more started to form. Many people say that the Big Bang will start again but it is definitely not true. The universe is still expanding minute by minute, second by second. And even if it ever stops, ( who’s chances are very less) it will contract under its own gravity and collapse. It would probably be known as the, “Big Crunch” which is practically the exact opposite of The Big Bang. The Big Bang is just a theory. It doesn’t have to be true. This is just a way to find out a part of the universe’s puzzle. The universe is still a huge mystery. It is waiting to be solved. And it is up to US to solve it... Look around outside. It looks wonderful, right? Trees, grass, maybe birds chirping. You can hear a noise. The noise of cars speeding through the dirty roads. That isn’t as pleasant as the sounds of animals, right? Unless you want animals to go away and just hear the car noise, we think everyone should try to help animals survive.
One of the vulnerable animals in the world is the polar bear. These precious bears are decreasing in their small population every day! Population: 22,000-31,000 (WWF.org) The reason for polar bears endangered: Just Global Warming. Global Warming is caused when the Greenhouse Effect happens. BASICALLY, carbon dioxide traps the heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. The snow in Antarctica the Arctic start melting. This means polar bears have less places to live! It would be sad for that to happen. But everyone can make it not happen! There are a few ways to stop Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect and help the polar bears:
“Choose a utility company that generates at least half its power from wind or solar and has been certified by Green-e Energy, an organization that vets renewable energy options. If that isn’t possible for you, take a look at your electric bill; many utilities now list other ways to support renewable sources on their monthly statements and websites.” (nrdc.org) The polar bear is classified “vulnerable” for now, but if you can help, you can make the polar bear least concerned about going extinct. Welcome to Millstone River School! At Millstone River Upper Elementary School, we have 3rd graders, 4th graders and 5th graders. The principal of our school is Ms. Bonino. At MRS, we have two assistant principals: Ms. Shanklin and Ms. Skibinski. We also have two guidance counselors who are Ms. Sternbach and Mrs. Valleriani.
In third grade, you get to go on two field trips. The first field trip is to the New Jersey state museum in Trenton, and the second field trip is to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. You will also have a winter chorus concert and a spring chorus concert. You even get your own class t-shirt! There are nine different 3rd grade teachers and they are all very nice. When you are in 4th grade, you have Record Breakers in the beginning of the school year. In December or January, you will get to decorate your very own gingerbread house (that you will be able to take home) in the cafeteria. This year, you will have an option of continuing chorus or you can enroll in orchestra. The four instruments you can choose from in orchestra are: the violin, viola, cello, or bass. You will also have two field trips. The first one is a tour of Philadelphia and the second one is a trip to a reservoir in NJ. There are 18 different fourth grade teachers. I think that 5th grade is the best because you are officially the seniors of the school. In fifth grade you get to have the fifth grade carnival at the end of the year. You then get your “Keep Calm and Middle School On” t-shirt so that you always remember Millstone River School! You also go on 2 field trips which are: the Colonial Bowling Alley, and you even get to go to the beach! However, you have to clean the beach, not play in the sand and water (although you might get to do that at the end). There are also 17 very nice teachers fifth grade teachers. At MRS, we also have many specials. They include: Computers, Ensemble, Chorus, Art, Music, P.E. or Gym, M.A.G.I.C/Further Enrichment, Media/Library. Throughout the year, there are school spirit days (pajama day, etc.), fundraisers (coat drive, AVON,etc.), and pep rallies. In conclusion, Millstone River Upper Elementary School is the best upper elementary school in the district! I hope you enjoy your time at MRS! The North Pole is obviously a place where snow and ice cover all of the land, but there are many things that are also really cool about the North Pole like the northern lights, and all of the creatures that live there. The North Pole is a wonderful place to see snow and to have fun. One of the things that occurs mostly at Fairbanks, Alaska at December or April is called Aurora Borealis (A-roar-a-bore-e-alice)(A.K.A The Northern Lights). Aurora Borealis is a time when electrons in the earth’s upper atmosphere crash together to make a beautiful array of color. The electrons also collide with oxygen, nitrogen, and molecules to make the color appear and the earth’s magnetic field helps shape The Northern Lights. In The North Pole there are also many creatures that live there like Reindeer, Arctic Foxes, Lemmings, Puffins, Walruses, and even Polar Bears. The North Pole might seem too cold for anything without a thick jacket to live, but nature has something like a jacket; instead blubber, fat, feathers and fur keep the animals warm. For The Herbivores instead of grass there is moss, bark and lichen to munch on for a snack. For the predators of course, they eat other animals that are feeding of the moss and the bark. The North Pole has a balanced ecosystem that allows animals to survive there. Over all, The North Pole is a wonderful place, the amazing events and animals that live there make it stand out. The Northern lights is a colorful sight and all of the creatures there are exotic and endemic to the north pole, the north pole is amazing. Have you ever been in a space ride at an amusement park? Take Mission: Space (Epcot Orlando Florida), for example. You never go into outer space, or anything. You’re just in front of a screen in this small space pretending to be an astronaut. Then how do they create conditions that REAL astronauts might experience? Why do you still feel 2.5 G-force, and can barely breath? This is Artificial Gravity. Artificial Gravity is a way that amusement parks can let you feel the force gravity without actually sending you into space. There a few ways to generate Artificial Gravity. The most common way is to have the object that the riders are sitting in to spin around and around very, very fast. The science to spinning for Artificial Gravity is very complicated. So I will try to explain it very simply to you. The rider, or riders are in the center, or the inside, of the ride vehicle. When the vehicle starts spinning very fast, imagine the force and gravity pushing into the center. This causes them to feel crushed and increases your body weight by 2.5 (which is the amount of G-force you experience). Also, they might find it difficult to breath. Some (or should I say, MOST) causes of Artificial Gravity is harmful to people. The results depend on the time of exposure the person has experienced. For example, real astronauts are experienced, and when they experience zero gravity it doesn’t bother them much. It usually goes away in a few days. But long exposures to zero gravity may give you headaches, muscle pain, etc. on other bad stuff. Also, you might fail to have as good hand-eye coordination as you had before. Artificial Gravity is a very amazing way for people to experience thrills but it can also be dangerous. You have to be careful riding these rides but you also have to remember to have fun!!! The book So B. It ,bySarah Weeks touches most people's heart as it did to me. It is a heartwarming story about a 12 year old girl named Heidi who tries to find herself, her life, where she came from who she really is and about her mama and she does not even have a birth certificate. Her mama is a mentally disabled women who only knows only 23 words and loves to draw with only mostly knows to colour. One of the words her mom kept saying was ,”soof”as she repeated it most of the time ,”Soof, soof, soof”, she would say and this made Heidi think what is was. When ever she asked her mama she would not be able to explain it. Heidi was lucky that she had her neighbor, Bernadette has a home attached to theres and she helps them with a lot of things. Bernadette named mama So B.It beacuse she thinks everyone needs a middle name.
One day when Heidi finds hope with very little of mamas of past and she has no idea what it is but she does not stop and thinks very hard and looks for more clues. To think she would stop she did not she kept going and she did not give up.She searches until finally she finds where the photo was taken and that leads her to Hilltop Home, Liberty, New York. She has to find a way to get there at any cost to find out herself and who she and her mama is.She was doing what she was doing family and for example one time she has to make her a choice between the two things that is most important to her. Heidi is a very strong character I would say because in the story her whole life is a mystery and needs to be uncovered.Heidi It. is a person who does not give up, determined, strong, helpful, kind, thoughtful, lovable and caring and this is not all she is,she is much more than this.I think this story's moral is to never stop when life stops you but to keep going until you know that this is what you want.I think Heidi really shows me what a kid can do by him or herself. If you want to know what happens with Heidi it and know more you just need to read the book because am not going to tell you any more. “Eating is a necessity, but cooking is an art.”-Unknown
Everybody has to eat, but instead of making eating a chore, you can make it fun and healthy. Students should learn to cook in school, because the meals they eat will be healthier, they will learn lots of science, and finally, they will save money if they know how to cook their own food. Cooking is a great way to open a child’s mind to health and science and should be offered in schools. One reason I feel that cooking should be offered as a class in schools is that it will make the food that kids eat healthier. If students are learning about health then they will be able to make good choices resulting in a healthier lifestyle and a longer lifespan. According to a New York Times article debating this issue, most of the food that americans eat is highly proceed. In result, unless they cook their own food, this amount of extra preservatives contributes to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. Even though lots of school budgets are tight, an overall better future for the students should be worth it. Next, it is important that schools should offer cooking classes, because cooking is not just about food, it includes science. If kids are offered cooking classes in school, then they learn about science. Learn About Food Science says that food science helps introduce kids to physical, biological, and chemical reactions that occur when the food is mixed. Instead of having science where you sit at a desk for a long time, you can make a fun and somewhat active way to incorporate science into an everyday routine. In the same article they mention the micro science that can also be discovered by cooking. Bacteria and food safety will further educate our youth on how to continue to stay healthy and they will learn science and cooking in one package. Finally, cooking in schools would be a good idea, because if kids learn how to cook early, then you will be able to save money in the future. One way that they will be able to save money, according to 31 Insanely Smart Ways To Save Money When You Cook, if you know how to cook your own food, then you won’t waste money on the processing and packaging that most pre made food has. Time is money, and if kids learn cooking early it can also save them time. It will open up a passion that they may even consider for a career. “Time is money says the proverb, but turn it around and you get a precious truth. Money is time.” - George Gissing I know that some would be opposed to the idea of cooking. Some think that it is either too messy or expensive. However most schools spend lots of money of cooking staff. Instead this money could be directed to teaching the kids how to cook. That way they can cook their own food and the school saves money on both not having all the packaging and cooking staff. As for the mess, part of being a good cook is knowing how to manage your time and set aside some of it to clean up. In conclusion, cooking classes should be offered to students at schools because the meals will be healthier if they cook them themselves, they will learn about lots of science, and finally, they will save money if they know how to cook their own food. “Life is a kitchen. Put on your prettiest apron & whip up something incredible.” - Unknown Did you know there are many, many, and many endangered species out there? There are even tons of endangered sea species! Now that is very sad. Here are the top 5 endangered sea species:
Hawaiian Monk Seal Hawaiian Monk Seals are very endangered. In fact, the Hawaiian Monk Seals along with the Mediterranean Monk Seals are the only Monk Seals left. Sadly, the Caribbean Monk Seal which is the third Monk Seal specie is already Extinct. Endangering Hawaiian Monk Seals includes entanglement by fish gear, loss of food, and disease. People have hunted these Monk seals for oil. They also are hunted because they eat commercially important fish. White Abalone These White Abalone were listed close to 12 years ago. They were listed on being endangered on May 29 2001. The endangering of these White Abalone occurred due to overfishing, disease, and infections. Over the years, different diseases have damaged the population of the White Abalones. When the White Abalones were discovered, many people thought it had the best taste of any Abalone. So White Abalone business occurred and overfishing came. The Blue Whale The Blue Whale species are the largest of the whales. It is the size of thirty three elephants and three school buses! Scientists estimate that there are between 5, 000 and 12, 000 Blue Whales today. The population of the Blue Whales lowered a lot in the early 1900’s.These creatures were almost into extinction until International Whaling Commission declared protected in 1966. These Blue Whales are killed from ship strikes and in fish gear. Right Whale The Right Whale species are the rarest of all large whales. These species are North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Southern which are all endangered. One of the right whale specie, North atlantic is estimated that there are only 450 of them! They are hunted for oil and baleen( whalebone) for new generations. Just like another endangered specie Blue Whales, Right Whales get killed by ship strike and in fish gear. Short Tailed Albatross In 1940, these Albatross population lowered from tens of millions to such a small amount, they were almost extinct. They died from people hunting for their feathers and their islands getting damaged from volcano eruptions. Their nests and islands are in the coast of Japan and they migrate to the West coast of the United States. This is why it is very hard to track them. They are not hunted today, but they usually get caught mistakenly by these longline fish gear and mistake plastic for food. In 2008, in estimation, there were only 2,000 of Albatross left. This is why we should not hurt animals in both sea and land! Many people may think that adults just say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away so kids will eat their fruit, but my studies have led me to believe that consuming one apple a day does greatly improve your chances of living a healthier life. On top of being a great part of a child's approximate two serving of fruit a day, and according to WebMD, a medical site, a number seven on the charts brain foods. It also provides the body with vitamin c, which helps us in many ways.
According to a chart on healthykids.nsw.gov, it can be found that kids, boys and girls, ages nine through eleven should eat about two serving of fruit a day. Apples, having seeds, can be a great fruit to add into the mix for your two servings. An apple weighs between an average of seventy and one hundred grams, depending on its nourishment when still connected to the tree. Off of the same chart as mentioned before with serving sizes I now have found that one serving is about one hundred fifty grams. An apple, as a possible part of that serving, would sufficiently fill up most of the total three hundred grams. This helps keep the doctor away, because it causes them to not have to prod you to eat more. Eat one apple a day and most of your fruit servings will be filled up without complaint. Brain foods are foods that can help boost the amount of activity in your brain, therefore stimulating nerves that help move the thinking process along efficiently. Ever had a big test and you wake up to eggs on the table? That is because eggs are one of the main brain foods according to many standards. Apples can also be found to be one of these brain foods. Know that it is not the fruit inside that is the most healthy, rather the peel or skin. Also apples, while good brain food are sweet so they may appear more appetizing to some. According to some doctors, an apple a day can also decreases risk of cancer reasonably. Some examples of cancers that they “curb” the growth of are oral and breast as well as many others. For these reasons an apple a day would be highly beneficial to the health and well being of a person. Vitamin c can be found in abundance in fruit especially. Apples, being a fruit gets to share in the benefits of vitamin c, or ascorbic acid. Vitamin c can be useful in order to help the grow and furthermore health of connective tissue, bone skin and blood vessels. Vitamin c is useful in many ways, but only if you get enough of it, and with apples it is a semi sweet way to get this wonderful nutrients. Plain apples may contain between four and fourteen percent, which is not too much, but some fortified foods contain one hundred percent or more. Also, something to know with apples is that it is all in the skin of the apple, all the nutrients and such. The best way to eat an apple if you still want all the nutrients is to keep it whole bite of bit by bit. Remember though that before you eat an apple you should always wash it. An apple a day really keeps does keep the doctor away by flashing its benefits into your body when you eat one, so remember if you ever need to finish your daily fruit servings, boost the brain or get up some vitamin c then look to an apple for help. |
